Chapter 13

Once the fire was put out and the fire crew had left the scene, Marcus spoke with an arson investigator that explained to him that the fire was set using gasoline which was spread throughout house.

“Definitely arson, Mr. Douglas.”

After he left, Marcus spent the rest of the morning with a police detective, talking about his ex-wife and his ex-girlfriends. He told them about the early morning phone calls that he’d been receiving and what the caller said to him.

“Did you recognize the voice, Mr. Douglas?” the detective asked.

“No, I couldn’t. All I could tell is that it was a woman’s voice, but it was muffled. Like she had something over the receiver.”

“I understand. When you left here after the last incident, where did you go?”

“I drove downtown and checked into the plaza.”

“Did you stop anywhere, or talk to anybody?”

“No, sir, not on the way there, but I did go to the bar in the hotel. I had a couple of drinks and then went to my room.”

“You talk to anybody at the bar?”

“Other than the bartender, no.”

“Was anybody else at the bar?”

“Yes, there were a few people there.”

“Did you recognize anybody?”

“No.”

“Did you notice anything, or see anybody watching you while you were at the bar?”

“No; at least not that I paid any attention to. I was just trying to clear my head.”

“How long were you at the bar?”

“Maybe forty-five minutes, no more than an hour. Like I said, I really wasn’t paying much attention to anything.”

“After the night you had I can’t say I’d have been any more observant under the circumstances.” The detective put away his notes. “What I think happened is that your stalker was somewhere close by and followed you to the hotel.”

“That was my thought as well.”

“I guess you didn’t see anybody following you?”

“No.”

“I have officers canvassing the area; I’ll make sure that they are aware that she may still be in the area.”

“For all we know she may be watching us right now.”

“It’s a strong possibility.”

“Great.”

When he left the police, Marcus was tired from not sleeping much the night before. He considered going to another hotel, but was afraid that if his stalker was still in the area that she, whoever she is, will follow him and the same thing will happen again.

“She already burned down the house, what else can she do?” as he got in his car, Marcus paused and thought about the question he had just asked himself. “She could kill you this time.”

Marcus started up the car and drove away from what used to be his house. For the next hour, he drove around, looking in his rear-view mirror. He thought about calling Garrett and taking him up on his offer to use his apartment, but Garrett was with his kids and Marcus didn’t want to take any more time away from them than he already had.

While he drove, Marcus thought back to something Panthea said when they first met. “The Ferguson trial,” she told Marcus that first day in his office.
